The circus air thrummed with the laughter and screams of younglings all about.
“It’s about showtime,” the ringmaster, Lepus, said. He was giddy with excitement, and looked over the her cohort-Orion.
“The shows already started,” Orion stated blankly, but there was no mistaking the look of awe and amazement in his eyes. Lepus laughed, grabbing Orion’s hand and dragging them towards the Ferris Wheel.
The Cartwheel Carnival had an amazing assortment of all sorts of food, activities, games, and rides. However, not even the heart-stopping rollar coasters could hold a candle to the Ferris Wheel-the center peak of the entire event. Everyone came from near and far just to get a glimpse of it-which, they got plenty of while waiting in the 6-hour long line.
“We don’t have time to wait in this all day,” Orion said, referring to the line. Lepus smirked-a cheeky grin that lit up their face. Compared to the stark background of the lights, it was still the brightest thing Orion saw that evening thus far. Unbeknownst to Orion, Lepus had planned ahead-and by planning ahead, she meant bribing someone to stand in line for her.
By the time Orion caught up to Lepus, who had ran ahead, he gasped in amazement. The Ferris wheel up close was nothing short of astonishing, and he knew this was only the beginning of it. Excitement weaved it’s way through his lungs, and for the first time this evening, he felt truly carefree.
When it was there turn to go on the ride, Orion was the one to take Lepus’s hand first as he ran up the ladders and into one of the waiting compartments. Sitting down, Lepus leaned her head onto Orion’s shoulder as they slowly raised up into the sky.
“It’s a shame we stopped before we were at the very top,” Orion commented.
“The view is just as pretty here as it is up there,” Lepus replied. Orion smiled.
“Yes, it really is.”
…
The ride ended shortly after-and after the peaceful ride together, the two didn’t have the energy to do too much else. Grabbing something to eat at one of the many concession stands, funnel fries & lemonade shak-ups were the dinner tonight. Despite the very sweet combination, the two were able to enjoy both flavors fully together as they sat on one of the many benches, overlooking all the rides and games that made noises around them.
“I wish we could do this every day,” Lepus commented.
“Then it wouldn’t be special anymore,” Orion said matter-of-fact-ly. Lepus huffed.
“Everyday can be special if we make it-just as everyday can be difficult if we make it too. Why not choose the fun one?”
“Making it difficult? That does sound fun,” he smiled to her.
“No silly-making everyday special.”
And so, the two sat there for what felt like hours but must’ve been minutes-their own bubble of safety with each other blocking out all the noise, until it became a musical hum in the distance.
